Introduction
The "National Conference on In-house R&D in
Industry" was first organised by the Department
of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government
of India in Aril 1987. So far, 14 National Conferences
on in-house R&D in Industry have been organised
by DSIR. These Conferences have always addressed contemporary

"Opportunities offered by cutting edge technologies
in Bio sciences"
Recent advances in genomics and proteomics have opened
up exciting new opportunities for treatment of many
diseases, which were hitherto incurable and which would
only be managed or controlled. Also, recent developments
in the field of plant biology and biotechnology have
opened up opportunities for development of new plant
and crop varieties which can have much higher yield
potential, resistance to diseases, higher nutritive
and therapeutic properties. This is an area, where the
existing in the country is not far behind the expertise
in developed countries. Given the right encouragement
and infrastructure, India can well be at par with research
being carried out internationally in this field. New
business opportunities thrown open by developments in
this field form the subject matter of this session.
"Enabling Mechanisms for Biotechnology - Role
of State Governments"
State Government have an important role to play in
promoting biotechnology by becoming real stakeholders.
Some States have already formulated biotechnology policies
and have started setting up biotech parks. In healthy
competition with each other, the States are offering
infrastructural facilities, fiscal incentives and so
on. A platform is being provided in this forum for the
States to showcase their strategies and plans.
